Who We Are

Who We Are

Gamers Outreach is a charity that empowers hospitalized children.
We're building a world where play is easily prioritized alongside research and treatment.

Our mission

Every year, millions of children and families receive medical care in hospitals, where the experience can feel frightening and isolating. Hospitalization can separate kids from their friends, school, and the everyday joy of play.

Gamers Outreach is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a quest to restore joy and normalcy in the lives of hospitalized families - through the power of video games.

We believe video games are uniquely capable of making recreation accessible to children across a wide range of ages, abilities, and medical circumstances. Our programs help hospitals provide therapeutic play alongside clinical care by addressing two common barriers: access to gaming equipment and staff familiarity with the technology. That means kids can focus on being kids while healthcare teams focus on treatment.

Through initiatives such as our portable GO Karts and Player 2 volunteer program, we work alongside healthcare professionals to improve the patient experience. Video games create digital playgrounds where kids can connect, create, explore, and have fun - even during treatment.

Founding Story

Gamers Outreach was founded after a bunch of high school kids had their video game tournament shut down by a police officer.

Wait, what?

In 2006, 16-year-old Zach Wigal, sidelined by mono, developed a passion for competitive video game tournaments. In 2007, he and his friends organized a Halo 2 tournament for 300 participants, but a local official canceled it, claiming video games corrupted youth.

Undeterred, Wigal founded Gamers for Giving in 2008, a charity-focused gaming tournament. This led to the creation of Gamers Outreach Foundation, a 501(c)(3) initially aimed at hosting such events.

While exploring charitable causes, Wigal connected with C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and recognized the need for bedside activities. After volunteering, he developed the “GO Kart,” a portable gaming kiosk for kids unable to leave their rooms.

Gamers Outreach grew into a widespread organization, supporting hospital programs to provide activities alongside treatment. From a high school project to aiding thousands of hospitalized kids annually, Gamers Outreach ensures access to relief through gaming.
